At 8:15 p.m., university police responded to the basketball courts next to the Miron Student Center and transported the student to a nearby hospital, police said. Officers said they believe the incident is related to a group of people who were riding around the campus on bicycles.

"There is no ongoing threat to public safety," the university said in a statement, noting there was an extra police presence on campus overnight.

In an open letter posted on the university's website, Lamont Repollet, Kean's president, said he was deeply troubled and upset by the incident. Repollet encouraged students who needed assistance to reach out to the Kean Counseling Center or the school's teletherapy program.

"Cougars are resilient, and we will not let this crime change the Cougar experience," Repollet said. "Please keep our student and his family in your prayers."
